Blackford Analysis, a provider of software products that accelerate comparison of medical images, today announced that it has secured a Smart grant from  Innovate UK to support the further evolution of its Blackford Workflow Server product into a vendor-neutral pre-processing (VNP) platform. The product’s VNP capability is designed to allow useful imaging information to be shared and accessed across the healthcare enterprise. Smart is a grant scheme which offers funding to companies to engage in R&D projects in the strategically important areas of science, engineering and technology, from which successful new products, processes and services could emerge. Blackford Workflow Server integrates easily into any picture archiving and communications system (PACS), providing radiology departments with advanced capabilities that unlock faster turnaround times and greater productivity. With its enhanced VNP platform, the benefits realized by radiology can be extended through to the wider enterprise. “Clinicians need information rather than data. The challenge is not how to get a thousand slices to a tablet – it is to get useful information at the point of care” said  Ben Panter, CEO, Blackford Analysis. “In the increasingly centralized healthcare IT environment, a VNP platform adds flexibility and value to the imaging process by allowing relevant information to be distilled from images and easily shared between departments” While various advanced viewer solutions access images over DICOM, this is the first time a generic processing hub will be made available. The VNP capability acts as a broker for pre-processing innovation from additional parties, which enable rapid integration of third party processing workflows. The results can be integrated directly into Enterprise viewers or PACS workstations without breaking end user workflow by needing to switch context.
